Thomas W. Smith Sr., age 71, of Celina, Ohio passed away at 3:30p.m. on Sunday Jan. 19, 2014 at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on May 19, 1942 in Lex, West Virginia to the late Virgil and Pearlie Mae ( Addair ) Smith. On Aug. 19, 1976 he married Joyce Kemper, who is surviving. Also surviving are his daughters & son-in-law Cheryl L. & Raymond Hall of Colerain, NC, Elyn Selu of Venice, CA, son & daughter-in-law Thomas W. Jr. & Bonette Smith of Union City, PA, David L. Smith & Susan Messerschmidt of Charlotte, NC, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, sister & brothers-in-law Glenna & Ralph Owens of Mooresville, IN. Joe Ryan of New Castle, Delaware and his sister-in-law Pauline Smith of Indianapolis, IN. Thomas was preceded in death by his brother Mont C. Smith and two sisters & brother-in-law Nora C. Ryan and Belvia R. & Robert Beckner. Thomas received his Bachelors Degree in Education from Bluefield State College in Virginia and a Masters Degree in Education from St. Francis College in Indiana. He was an Art Teacher at the Celina City Schools for 25 years and retired in 1996. In addition, he coached wrestling and Football for Celina Junior High School. Thomas served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 -1964. He was a member and an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Celina and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge in Celina. Funeral services will be held at 10:30a.m. on Thursday Jan 23, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Celina, with Rev. Douglas Meyer officiating. Military Honors will follow the services at the Church. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 22, 2014 at the Lehman-Hogenkamp-Dzendzel Funeral Home in Celina and 1 hour before services on Thursday at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Celina or the Community Health Professionals of Celina. Condolences may be left at LHDfuneralhome.com.
